about S.O.W.

Project S.O.W, which stands for “Save Our World” was founded in December of 2019 with the goal to create a healthier and more eco-friendly environment and community. We started our first project just as the COVID-19 started, and ever since then, we have done several more. S.O.W has worked with other organizations and made connections with a diverse group of people to initiate change in this world. Although it may be a small change we create, we hope that it will spread like a domino effect and hopefully we can influence big change in the future.

Park beautification

Park beautification

Our first plan for S.O.W was to start a park clean-up and beautification project, however, due to the COVID-19 that struck a couple of months after we started planning we had to pause and delay our plans, and hopefully in the future when the case numbers go down we still have the opportunity to complete that project. Nonetheless, we still have all of the plans we had made for that particular project. We went there to look for a possible place to plant flowers and other small shrubs. We also planned to incorporate moss into the space to create more oxygen production and involve more greenery into city benches. Ultimately, our group would love to continue this project in the future if COVID allows and we can't wait for better things to come.

Hand sanitizers

When the COVID-19 hit us, S.O.W had to delay our park beautification plans and we started thinking about how we could benefit society in this time of suffering for all. Finally, we decided to research and make hand sanitizers to send to hospitals in Daegu that were struggling with supplies due to the influx of COVID patients during that time. For a couple of weeks, we researched certain ingredients that had disinfectant properties, and for the first couple of days actually making the hand sanitizers, we used our kitchen to crank out hundreds of bottles at a time, but eventually, the entire team gathered together and we made up to about 500 bottles of hand sanitizers. It was the first project that S.O.W had completed, and it was the most gratifying feeling, especially knowing that we are creating even the smallest amount of positive change in the world. After we sent the hand sanitizers to the hospitals in Daegu, a couple of days later we received a letter from the hospital board, I felt so happy that we made some impact and knowing that we didn’t just buy those hand sanitizers but that we made them with our own hands makes the reward so much more worth it. To this day, our group still makes those hand sanitizers and I personally use them on a daily basis.

Teaching

Teaching

At the beginning of 2021, our S.O.W members started teaching at the local orphanage we were really close with. Before the COVID started, I remember we used to play with them and have regular events with the kids, but unfortunately that was paused for the time being. However, we heard that some of the kids really wanted to learn English, so we offered to teach them through zoom, and ever since February, the other members and I have taught our own respective kids. I have taught three in total, and am still continuing to this day. At first, it was very nerve-wracking since these were kids I had actually not met before, and were a bit older than some of the kids we had played with. Regardless of that, after some time of getting to know each other, we all got very comfortable with one another. Now, we talk just like friends, and even though it gets hectic with all of the talking and running around, I am so grateful to know that they are comfortable enough with me to show me their house, passion, and friends also. It has been one of the best experiences of my life and I would love to continue in the future.

Food distribution

Food Distribution Campaign

One thing our S.O.W members all loved was cooking, so we decided to play to our strengths and implement a passion into the work that we do. Almost every month, our entire team would meet up together to cook and bake various types of foods and small desserts like cookies and small sandwiches for the kids and staff at the orphanage and other people in need. Even though I couldn’t deliver these treats in person, I still felt joy in making the food and knowing that I can even help remotely.

Flower donation

S.O.W started this flower donation campaign at the beginning of 2020, and from then on, every 2 months our group would come together and have a flower arranging session to create beautiful bouquets that we would then donate to elderly homes. Although we were not able to visit in person, every 2 months S.O.W would send fresh flowers, and we can only hope that we can bring just even the tiniest bit go joy for the residents.
